Volunteer Opportunities
If you have time to spare, we have jobs to share!!!
Whether you have several hours a week to donate or want to help with one special event during the year, there are many volunteer opportunities available at FAWE. Browse through the list of activities on this page and then phone the Volunteer Coordinator to find out how you can get involved.
YEAR-ROUND OPPORTUNITIES
These activities are ongoing through the entire school year, providing opportunities to help and build some new friendships, too.
MEDIA CENTER
The Media Center Staff always has things you can do to help, from shelving books to updating computer files to setting up new displays. You can usually choose the time you want to be there, so this opportunity allows you to work around your schedule.
BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION
You've seen them! They look like coupons on box tops of various General Mills products. Cut out those "Box Tops for Education" and send them into school with your child. The school gets 10 cents for each one, and the proceeds are used to purchase items such as school equipment and books. FAWE also collects Campbell soup labels. Watch for other "give back to your school" opportunities as well, such as offers from local stores.
CLASSROOM HELPER
Teachers request classroom helpers to come in on a regular basis (often weekly) to help with routine class work such as "centers", math or reading. Occasionally they need someone to tackle a specific in-class project. If you'd like to be on a resource list for such an assignment, contact a volunteer Coordinator.
MOM'S WORKSHOP
Can you cut and paste? Color and count? Then you are qualified to help this group perform "behind-the-scenes" prep work requested by teachers. The workshop is held every Tuesday from 8:45-11:15 in the workroom off the stage. You are welcome to drop in as your schedule permits, with no regular obligation required. Younger siblings are welcome to come and play too, so no need to schedule a sitter while you volunteer!
LUNCHROOM
have you mastered the art of opening milk cartons and squeezing ketchup bottles? If so, then you could join the ranks of the lunchroom volunteers. Lunch is served from about 10:30-1:00, giving ample time to exercise and perfect your skills!
SUNSHINE MATH
Formerly called Math Superstars, this weekly math take-home worksheet is graded by volunteers. (Yes, we give you the answers!) If you can spare some time at school or at home, the Sunshine Math group could use your help.
MENTOR
Mentors spend about one hour per week with a student who may need a boost, either academically or socially. Training is provided to mentors, so academic expertise is not required to apply, but a regular commitment is desired.
ROOM PARENT
Each teacher chooses 1 or 2 parents to assist with special events throughout the year. Contact other parents and guardians to inform them of upcoming activities and solicit supplies or physical help to carry them out. This is a great way to be involved in your child's class without having to be there regularly.
